After a weekend of an awful weather here in York, I pottered off into the garden on Monday morning to see the chickens and enjoy a little of the sunshine AND look at WHO I happened to stumble across!
On this first day of Lent known as Ash Wednesday, the doors to St M’s Parish Church have opened as the Rev. Suze supported by Verger Philly offer a warm welcome on a chilly and damp afternoon to some familiar faces who have chosen to wear some ‘Sorry Ashes’ on their mouse noses or hang a message of hope on the branches of our Lent Tree…
And although MY summer was remembered as being the stuff of nightmares with interrupted plans, a twisted spine and torn nerves; it is fortunate that York enjoyed something of an Indian summer throughout last September and taking advantage of the balmy weather; there was plenty of activity at the end of my garden for with the door to my Den open, I indulged in a dream of mine with the creation of another fantasy structure for the All Hallows Hamlet…
As Claire’s only friend is the ancient recipe book that has been in her family for as long as anyone can remember – she concocts a vast array of nasty potions from the beautiful flowers, nourishing berries and healing plants which she gathers every day at dusk and here they remain gathering dust on the cobwebby shelves.

For having fallen in love with the vision of Cadfael’s Herbarium with its charming thatched roof, an interior of stone flagged floors with pots of healing potions all bubbling away on the huge and welcoming fire and masses of dried herbs hanging from the rafters – I am now making plans to create my own unique Herbarium!
